How Much Does the Ford Expedition Cost

The 2020 Ford Expedition is the most expensive vehicle in the 

large SUV class. It starts at $52,810, and three higher trim levels 

have prices that range from around $63,300 to almost $74,000. 

You can add four-wheel drive for roughly $3,000. These prices are 

for the standard-length body style.

A long-wheelbase Expedition Max configuration is available with 

any trim and drive train, adding around $3,000 to your purchase 

price. An Expedition Platinum Max with four-wheel drive starts at 

more than $80,000, which is a price more suitable for the luxury 

large SUV class.

How Many People Does the Expedition Seat?

The Ford Expedition seats eight people, though if you spring for 

second-row captain’s chairs seating drops to seven. Passengers 

should have ample room in the first two rows and adequate space 

in the third row. The front seats provide a commanding view of the 

road ahead. In contrast to large SUVs like the Chevrolet Tahoe and 

Chevy Suburban, or the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, you won’t 

get any extra room in the third row by upgrading to the long-

wheelbase Expedition Max.

Expedition and Child Car Seats

The Expedition has a full set of LATCH car-seat connectors for 

each second-row seat, whether you stick with the bench or go with 

captain’s chairs. The third-row outboard seats also have a full set, 

with an additional tether anchor for the middle seat. All of the 

anchors are easily exposed for quick access. The Expedition’s 

cavernous cabin makes it easy to load most types of car seats.

Expedition Interior Quality

The Expedition boasts a high-end, modern cabin with plenty of 

premium materials. Its relation to the Ford F-150, a full-size 

pickup truck, is felt in some utilitarian touches, like hard plastics, 

but overall the cabin atmosphere is nice.

Upper trims like the King Ranch and Platinum have upgraded 

leather upholstery, aluminum and wood trim pieces, and lots of 

other leather-wrapped surfaces. These models give some luxury 

SUVs a run for their money.

Expedition Cargo Space

The Expedition boasts an enormous amount of cargo space. In its 

standard body length, the Expedition has 20.9 cubic feet of space 

behind the third row, 63.6 cubic feet with the third row folded, and 

a whopping 104.6 cubes with both rear rows folded. Those values 

trounce the Chevy Tahoe and GMC Yukon, which both offer 15.3, 

51.7, and 94.7 cubic feet.

As we noted above, all the extra space in the long-wheelbase 

Expedition Max goes to the cargo hold. This model has 36 cubic 

feet behind the third row, 79.6 cubic feet behind the second row, 

and a maximum of 121.5 cubic feet. The larger Expedition is 

closer in cargo space to General Motors’ extended SUVs, the 

Chevy Suburban and GMC Yukon XL, which each have 39.3, 

76.7, and 121.7 cubic feet, respectively.

Expedition Infotainment, Bluetooth, and Navigation

Every Expedition comes standard with the user-friendly SYNC 3 

infotainment system, which includes Android Auto and Apple Car 

Play. SYNC 3 doesn’t have the flashiest graphics or displays, but 

its 8-inch touch screen is easy to use thanks to large virtual buttons 

and simple menus. There are also large, clearly marked knobs on 

the center stack for climate control and audio adjustments.

Additional standard features include satellite radio, voice 

recognition, four USB ports, and a WiFi hot spot. Optional 

infotainment features include two third-row USB ports, wireless 

device charging, a household-style power outlet, navigation, a rear-

seat entertainment system, HD Radio, and a 12-speaker Bang & 

Olufsen sound system.

Expedition Engine: Get Your Kicks With This V6

The Ford Expedition defies the belief that you need to power a big, 

bulky SUV with an equally big and powerful V8 engine. Behind 

the blue oval is a 3.5-liter Eco Boost (turbocharged) V6 engine that 

puts out 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. In the top 

Platinum trim, output is tuned to 400 horsepower and 480 pound-

feet of torque.

With either engine, the Expedition has lots of muscle on tap. 

Acceleration is quick from a stop, with strong throttle response as 

you hit the gas. A 10-speed automatic transmission is standard 

throughout the lineup. This gearbox shifts at the right time, nicely 

complementing the engine’s power.

Expedition Gas Mileage: Good, Relatively Speaking

The 2020 Expedition gets an EPA-estimated 17 mpg in the city and 

23 mpg on the highway, which are among the best figures in the 

large SUV class. Fuel economy drops to as low as 16 mpg in the 

city and 21 mpg on the highway with the four-wheel drive, long-

wheelbase Expedition Max.

Expedition Ride and Handling: Bulky but Not Bad

Driving the Expedition generally feels like you’re in a smaller 

vehicle. It’s mostly agile around corners, and the steering is 

responsive and well-weighted. Maneuvering in tight spaces is 

difficult, but you don’t buy an SUV of this size because you want a 

deft city car. Ride quality is smooth over most surfaces, though it 

feels a little harsher when traversing bumpy roads. If you opt for 

larger wheels, you’ll also experience a choppier ride.

Expedition Off-Roading

The Expedition may not be as capable off road as some dedicated, 

smaller trail-crawler trucks or SUVs, but it can hold its own. 

Optional four-wheel drive is a good start, and you can add the FX4 

Off-Road package with all-terrain tires, a limited-slip differential, 

off-road shocks, and skid plates, among other upgrades.

This Ford boasts 9.8 inches of ride height, which helps it stack up 

fairly well industry-wide against other SUVs with the most ground 


Expedition Towing

When properly equipped, the Expedition can tow up to 9,300 

pounds. That’s the best capability in the class. You’ll get that 

power with a rear-wheel-drive standard-body-style Expedition 

outfitted with the Heavy Duty Trailer Tow package. Upgrades in 

that bundle include a heavy-duty radiator, a trailer brake controller, 

trailer backup assist, and a 3.73 electronic limited-slip differential.

J.D. Power gives the 2020 Ford Expedition a predicted reliability 

rating of three out of five, which is about average.

Ford Expedition Warranty

Ford covers the Expedition with a three-year/36,000-mile basic 

warranty and a five-year/60,000-mile power train warranty.

Expedition Crash Test Results

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the 

2020 Expedition an overall safety rating of five out of five stars. 

The Expedition earned five stars in the frontal and side crash tests. 

Rear-wheel-drive models received three stars in the rollover test, 

while four-wheel-drive Expeditions earned four stars in the 

rollover evaluation.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has not crash tested the 

2020 Ford Expedition.

Expedition Safety Features

New for 2020, all Expedition models come standard with the Ford 

Co-Pilot 360 bundle of active safety features. Co-Pilot 360 

includes automatic high-beam headlights, blind spot monitoring, 

rear cross traffic alert, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, 

forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, and forward 

automatic emergency braking. Despite its name, Co-Pilot 360 is 

not a semi- or fully autonomous driving mode. The driver is 

always fully responsible for safe operation of the vehicle.

Other standard safety features include a rear view camera, rear 

parking sensors, and Ford’s My Key. This system includes 

additional seat belt reminders, and it encourages safe driving by 

letting you do things like set speed and audio volume limits for 

secondary drivers.

Optional active safety features include rain-sensing windshield 

wipers, front parking sensors, stop-and-go adaptive cruise control, 

surround-view parking camera system, and automatic parking

The 2020 Ford Expedition comes in four trim levels: XLT, 

Limited, the new-for-2020 King Ranch, and Platinum. All models 

come standard with a turbocharged V6 engine and a 10-speed 

automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard in every 

model, while four-wheel drive is optional for around $3,000. Each 

Expedition trim is also available as an extended-wheelbase 

Expedition Max model for around $3,000 more than the regular 

body style.

The base model comes with a good number of standard features, 

including a touch-screen infotainment system with Android Auto 

and Apple Car Play, as well as a healthy dose of driver assistance 

features. The standard Expedition XLT also offers plenty of

Ford Expedition King Ranch

The Ford Expedition King Ranch costs $72,895. It comes with 

most of the optional features found in the Limited model, along 

with unique exterior badging; 22-inch painted wheels; gray body 

accents, roof rails, and running boards; and upgraded Del Rio 

leather seats and steering wheel and door panel coverings.

Ford Expedition Platinum

The range-topping Expedition Platinum starts at $73,935. Features 

include multi contour front seats, quilted genuine leather 

upholstery, enhanced noise control, and upgraded interior and 

exterior trim elements
